Pokemon GO – How To Harness The Phenomenon

Unless you have been living under a Geodude (rock) the past 2 weeks you know Pokémon GO has taken the globe by storm. Don’t believe the hype? Consider these stats:

  • Pokémon GO was downloaded more times in its first week from the Apple App Store than any other app, ever.
  • It has more active users a day than Twitter.
  • The app is on track to rake in over $5 Billion in the next 12 months.
  • A recent survey asked, “Have you ever gone to a store, restaurant, or other business that you otherwise wouldn’t have visited just to collect Pokémon or Battle at Gym?” 67% of respondents said yes!

So how can you harness this phenomenon to benefit your community? Great question!

Create An Event
Poke Party
If there is a Pokestop in or around your community hold an event where you throw down some lures paired with food and drink. Run a contest during the event offering a prize to whoever catches the highest rated Pokémon during the event!

Pokemaster Palooza
Invite the entire University (or city) to a Pokestop at your community at a certain day and time. During the event you will setup lures, food, drinks, and other games. Who ever catches the highest level Pokémon during the event wins a huge prize like a $1,000 scholarship for being a Pokemaster.

Charizards For Charity
Invite residents, prospects, etc. to an event on a certain day and time. During the event setup lures at a Pokestop located within the event. For each Pokémon that is caught your community will donate an amount equal to the CP level of that Pokémon. For example, a CP 10 Rattata equals $0.10 and a CP 230 Geodude equals $2.30. Don’t want to amount to get out of hand? Set a cap!

Legendary Pokémon Lottery
If you don’t want to go with the charity route above turn it into a lottery! Invite residents, prospects, etc. to an event on a certain day and time. During the event setup lures at a Pokestop located within the event. For each Pokémon that is caught an amount equal to it’s CP will be added to the jackpot. For example, a CP 10 Rattata equals $0.10 and a CP 230 Geodude equals $2.30. At the end of the specified time one lucky attendee will win the jackpot equal to the CP of how many Pokémon were caught! Don’t want to amount to get out of hand? Set a cap!

Outreach
Lure Lounge
Don’t have a Pokestop or Gym next to your community? No problem! Find a Pokestop in a location where your target demographic may be. For example, look for a Pokestop at a park, on campus, or a business district. Next, setup some nice furniture, drinks, and light refreshments. Once you are setup purchase a lure within the app and get ready for people to flock to your location. Invite them into your lounge and offer them a refreshment. The game isn’t all action, so now that you have them in your lounge you can make conversation and introduce them to your community.

Real Life Pokestop
Purchase a spin wheel and fashion it to look like the Pokestop rings in the game. Then, set it up at a nearby Pokestop along with a planted lure within the game. When people approach your booth ask them to fill out a guest card in order to spin your wheel to win real prizes.

Specials
Catch Em All
Invite prospects to take a tour at your community. If they catch a Pokémon on the tour give them a discount off their first month’s rent equal to the CP of the Pokémon they caught!

Get Social
Pokémon Paradise
Ask residents to take photos of the Pokémon they see in your community and post with a special hashtag. Pick one lucky winner and hook them up with a prize like a treasure full of Poke coins.
